Grader Comparison Harness Implementation Plan

For agentic workers: REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Use superpowers:subagent-driven-development (recommended) or superpowers:executing-plans to implement this plan task-by-task. Steps use checkbox (- [ ]) syntax for tracking.

Goal: Build a repeatable Inspect harness that runs several grader formats across several judge models on the same candidate answers, then use it for the phase-one study behind inspect_evals#2600.

Architecture: A replay task makes the judge the eval’s own model: the solver replays a stored candidate answer, and the scorer is label_agreement wrapped around the grader under test. Free-text graders apply six parsers to one reply. run.py runs one eval_set per (judge, grader) pair so spend can be checked as it goes. extract.py and analyse.py read the logs into results.csv, replies.csv, summary.md and contested.json, with rates averaged per case and intervals over cases. Dataset building, labelling and charts are separate modules.

Tech Stack: Python 3.12, inspect_ai 0.3.263 (the version in the repo’s lock), pydantic, pandas, PyYAML, httpx, python-dotenv, pytest with mockllm/model, matplotlib (charts only, via uv run --with matplotlib). OpenRouter for every real model call.

Spec: /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-12-grader-comparison-design.md (untracked, in the main checkout). Read it before starting.

Global Constraints

  • Use uv for everything: uv run pytest, uv run python, uv run ruff, uv run mypy. Never bare python, pytest or pip.
  • Work in the worktree /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/.worktrees/grader-comparison on local branch grader-comparison, created with --no-track from origin/main. Never push. No PR, no changelog fragment.
  • Code lives in tools/grader_comparison/, tests in tests/tools/grader_comparison/. Imports are absolute (from tools.grader_comparison.parsers import ...); the repo’s ruff config bans relative imports (TID252).
  • Ruff uses the Google docstring convention; missing docstrings are allowed. Do not add Args: sections unless every argument is documented. No magic-number comparisons (PLR2004) outside tests.
  • Datasets, REVIEW.md, summaries, CSVs and charts go to /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison/. Never commit them to inspect_evals. The hand-written seeds file adversarial.yaml is the only data file in inspect_evals, and it contains no benchmark content.
  • Eval logs go to /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/<run-name>/ (gitignored, in the main checkout so they outlive the worktree).
  • Tests never call a real model. Use mockllm/model with custom_outputs. pytest loads .env, which holds a live OPENROUTER_API_KEY, so an accidental real model id in a test would spend money.
  • Every real run passes log_model_api=True (done inside run.py). Without it Inspect drops the raw response, and with it usage.cost and provider, for all but the first few calls per model.
  • Judges (exact ids, vintage, reasoning): openrouter/openai/gpt-3.5-turbo 2023 no; openrouter/meta-llama/llama-3.1-8b-instruct 2024 no; openrouter/openai/gpt-4o-mini 2024 no; openrouter/openai/gpt-4.1 2025 no; openrouter/openai/gpt-5-mini 2025 yes; openrouter/openai/gpt-oss-20b 2025 yes; openrouter/z-ai/glm-5.3 2026 yes; openrouter/google/gemini-3.7-flash 2026 yes; openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5.5 2026 yes.
  • Panel (phase two only): openrouter/openai/gpt-6-sol, openrouter/google/gemini-3.1-pro-preview, openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.
  • Provisional grader for locally generated SimpleQA answers: openrouter/openai/gpt-5.4.
  • Budget: the OpenRouter key has a $250 limit; the ceiling agreed with Matt is $300. Stop and ask Matt before any step whose projected spend would take total usage past $250.
  • Markdown prose is never hard-wrapped.
  • Commit messages end with the trailer Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>.

Review Focus

  • Empty or reasoning-only replies. A reasoning model can put everything in a reasoning block and return empty visible text, or stop at max_tokens. Expected: every parser except substring fails, the reply is non-compliant, substring says no (the baseline bug, kept on purpose), and the reply is flagged truncated when the stop reason says so. Pinned in Task 2 (empty reply), Task 4 (reasoning-only output) and Task 7 (truncation flag).
  • CRLF and Markdown-decorated verdict lines. Judges write **Correct:** Yes, > correct: no, 1. correct: yes, and CRLF line endings. Expected: the anchored and strict parsers read them, and a negated label such as incorrect: yes is not read as a verdict. Pinned in Task 2.
  • A provider rejecting a mechanism. An old model refusing response_format raises inside the scorer. Expected: the run continues, the sample carries an error, and the analysis keeps it as a non-compliant reply with failure mode sample_error rather than dropping it. Pinned in Task 4 and Task 7.
  • Re-running after an interruption or a budget cut. Expected: run.py resumes into the same per-step log directories; each step that already ran keeps the epoch count it ran with, and a judge’s graders not yet run keep its reduced count instead of reverting to 3. Pinned in Task 6.
  • A dataset that changed after freezing. Expected: run.py refuses to start when the file’s SHA-256 differs from the config, and writing a dataset with duplicate ids fails. Pinned in Task 1 and Task 6.

Task 4: The generic graders, G1 to G5, and the registered task

Files:

  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/graders.py
  • Modify: tools/grader_comparison/task.py (append the @task function and its import)
  • Test: tests/tools/grader_comparison/test_graders.py

Interfaces:

  • Consumes: parse_all, has_preamble, FreeTextFormat (Task 2); build_task, SCORER_NAME (Task 3); test helpers (Task 3).

  • Produces: CRITERIA: str; TEMPLATE: str (placeholders {question}, {answer}, {criterion}, {instructions}); INSTRUCTIONS: dict[str, str] keyed by grader name; class Grade(BaseModel) with explanation: str then grade: Literal["yes", "no"]; render_prompt(state: TaskState, target: Target, instructions: str) -> str; free_text_judge(fmt: FreeTextFormat) -> Scorer; tool_call() -> Scorer; structured_output() -> Scorer; GENERIC_GRADERS: dict[str, Callable[[], Scorer]] with keys reason_then_verdict, verdict_only, tool_call, structured_output, verdict_then_reason; GRADERS: dict[str, Callable[..., Scorer]] (the full registry, extended in Task 5). In task.py: @task grader_comparison(dataset: str, grader: str, grader_args: dict[str, Any] | None = None, compare_keys: list[str] | None = None, slices: list[str] | None = None) -> Task, named grader_comparison_<grader>.

  • Free-text Score: value is a dict of C, I or NaN per parser name; metadata has format, reply, stop_reason, preamble, failure_modes, case_mismatch (a dict of bool | None per parser name).

  • Structured-output Score: value C or I, or Score.unscored(reason="grader_failed") with metadata["grader_failure_mode"] one of grader_refusal, grader_parse_failure, grader_schema_mismatch. The grade is lower-cased before validation; metadata["case_mismatch"] is True when that changed it, None when there was no string grade.

  • lower_grade(payload: object) -> tuple[object, bool | None]. G3 (tool_call) keeps the repo helper unchanged, so a Yes there stays a grader_schema_mismatch; Task 7 counts those as case-only failures.

The requirement is that one rejected call does not stop the other samples; record the finding in the commit message.

tools/grader_comparison/README.md:

# Grader comparison

Runs several grader formats across several judge models on the same candidate answers and reports format compliance, mechanism failures, parser behaviour, consistency and cost. Design: `docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-12-grader-comparison-design.md` in the main checkout.

The judge is the eval's own model. Each sample replays a stored candidate answer, and the scorer is the grader under test wrapped in `label_agreement`, which records each verdict and failure mode.

## Run

```bash
uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.run --config tools/grader_comparison/configs/<name>.yaml
uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.analyse logs/grader_comparison/<name> --out <artefacts-dir>
uv run --with matplotlib python -m tools.grader_comparison.charts <artefacts-dir>
```

`run.py` runs one eval set per (judge, grader) pair, so an interrupted run resumes where it stopped. It always logs raw model API calls, which the analysis needs for OpenRouter's billed `usage.cost` and serving `provider`.

## Graders

| Name | Format |
| --- | --- |
| `reason_then_verdict` | free text, final line `correct: yes` or `correct: no` |
| `verdict_only` | free text, one word |
| `verdict_then_reason` | free text, the verdict first, then one sentence |
| `tool_call` | `schema_tool_graded_scorer`, with the tool call forced |
| `structured_output` | the same schema as native structured output |
| `browse_comp_2233` | browse_comp's judge prompt and parser at #2233's head |
| `sycophancy_2283` | sycophancy's freeform judge prompt and parser at #2283's head |

Datasets and results are kept out of this repository.

In tools/README.md, under ## Analysis, after the judge_calibration_diagnostics.py section, add:

### `grader_comparison/`

Runs several grader formats (free-text verdicts, tool calls, structured output, and the judge prompts from open PRs) across several judge models on the same replayed candidate answers, and reports format compliance, parser disagreement, consistency across epochs and billed cost. Task 7: Reading logs into rows and replies

Files:

  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/extract.py
  • Test: tests/tools/grader_comparison/test_extract.py

Interfaces:

  • Consumes: SCORER_NAME, grader_comparison (Tasks 3 and 4); anchored (Task 2); SYCOPHANCY_LEADING (Task 5); RunConfig, run (Task 6); test helpers.

  • Produces: FREE_TEXT: tuple[str, ...] (reason_then_verdict, verdict_only, verdict_then_reason); GENERIC: tuple[str, ...] (FREE_TEXT plus tool_call, structured_output); COMPLIANCE_KEY: dict[str, str]; TRUNCATED = {"max_tokens", "model_length"}; @dataclass JudgeCall(reply, stop_reason, provider, output_tokens, reasoning_tokens, cost_usd, latency_s); billed_cost(response: dict[str, Any] | None) -> float | None; judge_call(sample: EvalSample) -> JudgeCall | None; read_log(path: str, run_id: str, judges: dict[str, dict[str, Any]]) -> tuple[list[dict[str, Any]], list[dict[str, Any]]]; load_run(log_dir: Path) -> tuple[pd.DataFrame, pd.DataFrame, dict[str, Any]] returning (rows, replies, run_info).

  • rows columns (the results.csv contract): run_id, dataset_hash, judge, grader, parser, sample_id, epoch, slice, tags, label, label_provenance, verdict, failure_mode, agrees, sample_error, stop_reason, provider, output_tokens, reasoning_tokens, cost_usd, latency_s, case_mismatch (float: that parser’s case flag for free text, the reply’s flag otherwise), reply.

  • replies columns: everything in rows except parser, verdict, failure_mode, agrees, plus vintage, reasoning, answer_model, verdict (from the grader’s compliance key), failure_mode, compliant (bool), truncated (bool), preamble (float: 1.0, 0.0 or NaN), first_anchored, last_anchored, first_token, last_token, anchored_disagree, token_disagree (float: 1.0, 0.0 or NaN), case_mismatch (float: the verdict was readable ignoring case but not lower case; NaN without a readable verdict), case_only_failure (float, G3 only: a failed reply whose only fault was the grade’s case; NaN elsewhere).

  • case_columns(grader: str, reply: str | None, verdicts: dict[str, str | None], inner_metadata: dict[str, Any], failure_mode: str | None) -> dict[str, float]. For free text it takes the strict parser’s flag when strict read a verdict, else last_anchored’s; for G3 it reads the grade from the tool-call arguments, so a Yes the helper rejected still counts.

If judge_call returns None for every sample, print [(n.type, n.name) for n in event_tree(sample.events) if isinstance(n, EventTreeSpan)] for one sample and match the scorer span’s actual type string; inspect_audit’s scorer_models() relies on "scorer"/"scorers" on the version it pins.

tools/grader_comparison/adversarial.yaml holds 30 hand-written seeds: 12 plain, 8 numeric, 10 equivalence. Rules every seed follows:

  • The question is common general knowledge, written fresh. Never copy a question from SimpleQA, HLE or any other benchmark.
  • plain seeds: at least 7 labelled "yes" and at least 3 labelled "no"; every one has a distractor (a plausible wrong answer) and no variants.
  • numeric seeds: 3 or 4 variants each, mixing "yes" (rounding-level differences a reasonable grader accepts) and "no" (close but clearly outside a reasonable tolerance). At least 25 variants in total.
  • equivalence seeds: 3 variants each, mixing "yes" (the same answer in another form: units, notation, ordering, algebraic form, a synonym) and "no" (a form that changes the content). At least 25 variants in total.

Start the file with these nine seeds exactly, then add 21 more following the rules:

Files:

  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/configs/judges.yaml (shared judge list, referenced by copy in each config)

Interfaces:

  • Consumes: make_dataset.py seeds (Task 9), run.py (Task 6), analyse.py (Task 8).

  • Produces: a smoke dataset and its hash under audit-artefacts/grader_comparison/datasets/, smoke logs, smoke outputs, and a per-judge cost table used to set judge_budgets in Task 12.

configs/judges.yaml holds the same judges: block alone, as the reference list; each config carries its own copy because RunConfig has no include mechanism.

uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.run --config tools/grader_comparison/configs/smoke.yaml

Expected: 45 eval sets of 5 samples each, about 225 judge calls, about $1 to $2. run.json shows spent_usd per step.

uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.analyse ~/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/smoke --out /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison/runs/smoke
uv run python - <<'EOF'

print(r[r.sample_error.notna()][["judge", "grader", "sample_error"]].to_string())
EOF

Expected: 225 replies; cost_usd and provider present on every reply without a sample error. If either is missing on most rows, Inspect’s OpenRouter ModelCall.response does not carry OpenRouter’s extra fields on this version: open one log in inspect view, find a scorer ModelEvent, and read what call.response holds. Stop and report to Matt with that evidence before going further.

For each judge, projected cost = mean billed cost per call × 6,000 (400 cases × 5 graders × 3 epochs) + mean billed cost per call × 1.5 × 2,400 (the two repo scorer rows; their template is longer). Write a table (judge, mean cost per call, mean output tokens, mean reasoning tokens, projected cost) and the total to $ART/runs/smoke/estimate.md.

Report to Matt: the table, the total against the $250 key limit, how provider rejections surfaced (sample errors per judge and grader from Step 4), and any judge whose reply shape looks broken. Do not start Task 11 until Matt agrees the estimate. If the total is above $250, propose which judges drop to one epoch or which slice shrinks.

Task 11: Build and freeze the phase-one dataset

Files:

  • Output only (under /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison/): sources/, datasets/<hash12>/dataset.jsonl, datasets/<hash12>/PROVENANCE.md.

Interfaces:

  • Consumes: make_dataset.py pool and assemble (Task 9); the Hawk CLI; inspect eval.

  • Produces: the frozen phase-one dataset path and hash for Task 12.

uv run --project /Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_audit inspect-audit-findings hawk-sets simpleqa_verified

Expected: a list of eval-set ids with models. If the command is missing on the checked-out inspect_audit branch, list sets with hawk.client.HawkClient as described in the memory note reference_hawk_log_access.md, filtering /meta/eval-sets records on task_names. Pick sets with distinct answering models (prefer current models; at most two sets per model).

SRC=/Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/sources

  --model-role grader=openai/gpt-5.4 \
  --sample-shuffle 7 --limit 300 \
  --log-dir "$SRC/generated"

Expected: two logs of 300 samples, graded by gpt-5.4, under about $5. The --model-role flag is required: without it the answerer grades itself.

ART=/Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison

uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.make_dataset assemble --pool $ART/datasets/pool.jsonl --yaml tools/grader_comparison/adversarial.yaml --out $ART/datasets/phase1/dataset.jsonl --seed 0

Expected: about 200 simpleqa cases and about 200 adversarial cases, and a sha256. Check the printed shortfall warnings: if any grade bucket is short, report it rather than lowering the target silently. Move the file to $ART/datasets/<first 12 hex of the hash>/dataset.jsonl, and write PROVENANCE.md beside it listing the Hawk set ids, the generation command, the pool size per answering model and grader, and the hash.

Task 12: Phase-one runs

Files:

  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/configs/first_cut.yaml
  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/configs/repo_scorers.yaml

Interfaces:

  • Consumes: the frozen dataset (Task 11); the per-judge estimate (Task 10); run.py.

  • Produces: logs under logs/grader_comparison/first_cut/ and logs/grader_comparison/repo_scorers/.

configs/first_cut.yaml is smoke.yaml with name: first_cut, the phase-one dataset path and dataset_hash, log_dir: ~/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/first_cut, epochs: 3, no limit and max_connections: 20. No judge_budgets: the smoke run showed the OpenRouter key’s usage endpoint does not reflect spend promptly, so the cut would never trigger, and the projection (about $39) is far below the key’s limit. Spend is checked from the logs’ costs between judges instead (Steps 2-3). Every run command sets INSPECT_COSTS_API_URL=https://llm-prices.generality.org/api/inspect-costs and sources .env from the main checkout.

configs/repo_scorers.yaml is the same except name: repo_scorers, its own log_dir, and:

graders:
  - {name: browse_comp_2233, compare_keys: [score]}
  - {name: sycophancy_2283}
uv run --with openai --with "anthropic>=1.0.0" --with google-genai --with git+https://github.com/jasongwartz/inspect_costs_plugin python -m tools.grader_comparison.run --config tools/grader_comparison/configs/first_cut.yaml \
  --judges openrouter/meta-llama/llama-3.1-8b-instruct openrouter/openai/gpt-oss-20b openrouter/openai/gpt-4o-mini openrouter/openai/gpt-3.5-turbo

Then check spend: curl -s https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/key -H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENROUTER_API_KEY" | uv run python -c "import json,sys; print(json.load(sys.stdin)['data']['usage'])" (source .env first). Compare with the estimate; if spend runs more than 25% over the estimate for these judges, stop and report to Matt.

for judge in openrouter/openai/gpt-4.1 openrouter/openai/gpt-5-mini openrouter/google/gemini-3.7-flash openrouter/z-ai/glm-5.3 openrouter/anthropic/claude-opus-5.5; do

done

After each judge, check run.json for spent_usd and any epoch cut. Stop and ask Matt before a judge whose projected cost would take total key usage past $250.

uv run --with openai --with "anthropic>=1.0.0" --with google-genai --with git+https://github.com/jasongwartz/inspect_costs_plugin python -m tools.grader_comparison.run --config tools/grader_comparison/configs/repo_scorers.yaml

Same spend checks as Step 3.

Replace the ## Findings placeholder sentence in $ART/runs/first_cut/summary.md with:

  • H1 and H2: supported, not supported or mixed, each citing the table cells (judge, grader, rate and interval) that decide it.
  • Rule 1 (prefer structured graders): G3 and G4 compliance against G1, G2 and G5 by vintage, with the forced-tool-call caveat.
  • Q1: the anchored and unanchored disagreement rates for G1, G2 and G5, and what they imply for #2598’s position default and for lint#57.
  • Retries: the at-least-one-in-two and in-three rates against one attempt, and whether bounded retries are worth mandating.
  • Case: the case-mismatch rate by judge and grader, and the share of G3 failures that were case only. If that share is material, recommend that schema_tool_graded_scorer normalise the grade before validating, as a separate inspect_evals change.
  • Repo scorer rows: for #2233, how often verdict_found was false (the silent default to no) and how often the anchored pair disagreed; for #2283, how often the trailing fallback decided the verdict (compliant false but a verdict present).
  • Caveats: provisional labels are not used; Sonnet 5 shares a family with Opus 5.5; provider routing (cite the provider column’s spread for llama-3.1-8b); temperature is each provider’s default.
  • Phase two: the count in contested.json and the token sample size, with a recommendation on whether to run it.

Commit in audit-artefacts (git add grader_comparison/runs, same trailer). Then report the findings and the phase-two recommendation to Matt and wait for his decision before Task 14.

Task 14: Phase-two labelling (only if Matt decides to run it)

Files:

  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/label.py
  • Create: tools/grader_comparison/configs/panel.yaml
  • Test: tests/tools/grader_comparison/test_label.py

Interfaces:

  • Consumes: contested.json (Task 8 output); load_run (Task 7); read_cases, write_cases (Task 1); run.py with --sample-ids (Task 6).

  • Carried from the Task 9 review: when phase two changes a simpleqa base’s label, its mutants (cases whose source.base_id is that base) must follow it. hedge stays no; incorrect_word_in_answer and injection take the new label; quoted_verdict_line is dropped when the label flips, because its quoted line would then agree with the label; verbose_correct is dropped if the base becomes no. apply_panel must do this, with a test.

  • Produces: decide(votes: list[Verdict | None], case: CaseRecord) -> tuple[Verdict | None, str | None, str | None] returning (label, provenance, review_reason); apply_panel(cases: list[CaseRecord], votes: dict[str, list[Verdict | None]], decisions: dict[str, Verdict]) -> tuple[list[CaseRecord], list[tuple[CaseRecord, list[Verdict | None], str]]]; CLI python -m tools.grader_comparison.label apply --dataset V1 --panel-logs DIR --out V2 --review REVIEW.md [--decisions decisions.yaml] [--allow-unresolved].

Run: uv run pytest tests/tools/grader_comparison/test_label.py -q

Expected: all passed.

uv run ruff check tools/grader_comparison tests/tools/grader_comparison

git add tools/grader_comparison/label.py tests/tools/grader_comparison/test_label.py
git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): add phase-two panel labelling and review list" -m "Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>"

Write configs/panel.yaml: the phase-one dataset and hash, name: panel, its own log_dir, epochs: 1, graders: [{name: tool_call}], and the three panel judges with vintage: 2026, reasoning: true. Then:

ART=/Users/matt/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison
uv run python -c "import json; c = json.load(open('$ART/runs/first_cut/contested.json')); json.dump(sorted(set(c['contested']) | set(c['token_sample'])), open('$ART/runs/first_cut/panel_ids.json', 'w'))"
uv run --with openai --with "anthropic>=1.0.0" --with google-genai --with git+https://github.com/jasongwartz/inspect_costs_plugin python -m tools.grader_comparison.run --config tools/grader_comparison/configs/panel.yaml --sample-ids $ART/runs/first_cut/panel_ids.json
uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.label apply --dataset <phase-one dataset> --panel-logs ~/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/panel --out $ART/datasets/phase2/dataset.jsonl --review $ART/runs/first_cut/REVIEW.md --allow-unresolved

Send Matt REVIEW.md. After he writes decisions.yaml, re-run label.py apply with --decisions and without --allow-unresolved, move the output to datasets/<hash12>/, and run the accuracy analysis:

uv run python -m tools.grader_comparison.analyse ~/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/first_cut --out $ART/runs/first_cut_labelled --labels $ART/datasets/<hash12>/dataset.jsonl

Add an accuracy paragraph to the findings, with the saturation caveat, and commit the artefacts in audit-artefacts.
