Grader prompt structure: implementation plan

For agentic workers: REQUIRED SUB-SKILL: Use superpowers:subagent-driven-development (recommended) or superpowers:executing-plans to implement this plan task-by-task. Steps use checkbox (- [ ]) syntax for tracking.

Goal: Measure how the way a judge prompt wraps the graded answer changes the success of template-aware injection attacks, across 14 prompt variants, 6 judges and two grader formats.

Architecture: The existing harness (eval_experiments.grader_comparison) gains a prompt-variant layer (prompts.py) and an attack layer (attacks.py). The G1 and G3 graders render their prompt through both, chosen by a prompt grader argument that defaults to phase one’s exact prompt. A new dataset subcommand builds clean, attacked and control cases from the phase-two labelled dataset. A new analysis module pairs every attacked reply with its base’s clean verdict and writes its own summary.md. Runs and results stay in this experiment’s directory, apart from grader-parsing.

Tech Stack: Python 3.12, uv, inspect-ai 0.3.263 (pinned), inspect-evals 0.24.0 (schema_tool_graded_scorer), pandas 2.x, matplotlib, pytest with mockllm/model.

Spec: spec.md. Read it before any task. The task requirements below implement it; where they are silent, the spec governs.

Global Constraints

  • Run everything with uv run from the repository root. Never pip, bare python or bare pytest.
  • No test calls a real model. Tests use mockllm/model through tests/grader_comparison/helpers.py.
  • Phase-one configs must keep their exact prompts: the prompt argument defaults to w0-bare, and W0 with instructions_last renders byte-identical to graders.TEMPLATE.format(...).
  • The attacker knows the template. Attack text uses the variant’s own close, reopen and reference_field, except W3, where the attacker cannot know the nonce and writes plain tags.
  • W4 is the fence from UKGovernmentBEIS/inspect_evals#2181 .github/scripts/register_submission/fence_untrusted.py: ⟦ U+27E6 and ⟧ U+27E7, ⟦BEGIN <label>⟧ / ⟦END <label>⟧, glyphs in content replaced with [ and ].
  • Attacks are applied at render time, before wrapping, neutralisation and JSON escaping.
  • Opus 5.5 (anthropic/claude-opus-5-5) does not run G3. It rejects forced tool choice (inspect_evals#2695).
  • Datasets, eval logs, results.csv, replies.csv and anything else holding SimpleQA question, reference or answer text are never committed. They live under ~/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison/prompt_structure/ and ~/Developer/inspect_ai/inspect_evals/logs/grader_comparison/prompt_structure/.
  • Nothing under experiments/grader-parsing/ changes.
  • Every commit ends with the trailer Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>. Stage only your own files (git add <paths>, never git add -A while another task’s files may be present).
  • Before each commit: uv run pytest -q, uv run ruff check ., uv run ruff format --check ., uv run basedpyright src tests. All must pass.
  • Prose in Markdown: one line per paragraph, short sentences, no em-dashes.
  • Budget: about $75-90 for the runs (spec, Cost). The controller stops and asks Matt before spending beyond the smoke run.

Review Focus

  1. Braces in an answer. An answer containing {x} or }} must render verbatim in every variant and through the G3 path, never raise KeyError or IndexError from str.format. Pinned in Task 2 and Task 4.
  2. A phase-one run.json without label keys. Re-running into an existing log directory whose stored graders have no label must merge cleanly, keyed on label or name. Pinned in Task 1.
  3. Ties and failures in the clean epochs. A base whose clean epochs split 1-1-1 or contain failures has no clean majority. It must be ineligible, never counted as resisting or succumbing. An attacked reply with no verdict counts as breakage, not as a failed attack. Pinned in Task 7.
  4. Non-ASCII and multi-line answers in W5. JSON wrapping must keep accented and CJK text readable (ensure_ascii=False) and keep newlines inside the string escaped, so the data block stays one valid JSON object. Pinned in Task 2.
  5. Missing costs. Direct-provider calls may have no cost when the costs plugin is unavailable. The cost table must show n/a, not raise or show $0.000. Pinned in Task 7.

Run: uv run pytest tests/grader_comparison/test_run.py -q --no-cov -k "labels or label_defaults or skip_graders or without_labels" Expected: FAIL (label and skip_graders are not fields; extra keys are ignored or rejected).

In run.py, add model_validator to the pydantic import and change the two specs:

class JudgeSpec(BaseModel):
    model: str
    vintage: int
    reasoning: bool = False
    model_args: dict[str, Any] = Field(default_factory=dict)
    # grader names (not labels) this judge never runs, e.g. a mechanism its API rejects
    skip_graders: list[str] = Field(default_factory=list)

class GraderSpec(BaseModel):
    name: str
    # names the step directory and the run.json entry; several labels may share a name
    label: str = ""
    args: dict[str, Any] = Field(default_factory=dict)
    compare_keys: list[str] | None = None

    @model_validator(mode="after")
    def _default_label(self) -> "GraderSpec":
        if not self.label:
            self.label = self.name
        return self

Replace _merged_specs and its two call sites in _load_info:

def _merged_specs(
    key_of: Callable[[dict[str, Any]], str],
    previous: list[dict[str, Any]],
    current: list[dict[str, Any]],
) -> list[dict[str, Any]]:
    """Every spec any invocation has named, the current config's spec winning."""
    merged = {key_of(spec): spec for spec in previous}
    merged.update({key_of(spec): spec for spec in current})
    return list(merged.values())

def _judge_key(spec: dict[str, Any]) -> str:
    return str(spec["model"])

def _grader_key(spec: dict[str, Any]) -> str:
    # phase-one run.json files predate labels
    return str(spec.get("label") or spec["name"])
    stored["judges"] = _merged_specs(_judge_key, earlier.get("judges", []), stored["judges"])
    # likewise the summary's columns come from every grader any invocation ran
    stored["graders"] = _merged_specs(_grader_key, earlier.get("graders", []), stored["graders"])

In run(), replace the grader loop header and the uses of grader.name and index:

    for judge in judges:
        earlier = [e for (j, _), e in previous.items() if j == judge.model]
        epochs = 1 if judge.model in cut_judges else min([config.epochs, *earlier])
        budget = config.judge_budgets.get(judge.model)
        graders = [g for g in config.graders if g.name not in judge.skip_graders]
        for index, grader in enumerate(graders):
            step_epochs = previous.get((judge.model, grader.label), epochs)

Inside the loop: log_dir=str(step_dir(config, judge.model, grader.label)), projected = spent * len(graders) if spent is not None else None, and the record becomes:

            record: dict[str, Any] = {
                "judge": judge.model,
                "grader": grader.label,
                "grader_name": grader.name,
                "epochs": step_epochs,
                "success": success,
                "spent_usd": spent,
                "git_commit": info["git_commit"],
                "inspect_ai": info["inspect_ai"],
            }

Rename step_dir’s third parameter to label (def step_dir(config: RunConfig, judge: str, label: str) -> Path: return config.log_dir / slug(judge) / label). The task call keeps grader=grader.name.

Run: uv run pytest tests/grader_comparison -q --no-cov Expected: all pass, including the existing run tests.

git add src/eval_experiments/grader_comparison/run.py tests/grader_comparison/test_run.py
git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): label grader specs and let a judge skip graders

Several prompt variants of one grader need their own step directories and
run.json entries, so a GraderSpec now has a label (defaulting to its name)
that keys both. A judge can skip graders by name, for a mechanism its API
rejects. Phase-one run.json files without labels still merge.

git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): add the 14 prompt variants for the prompt-structure experiment

Six wrappings of the data block (bare, Inspect's BEGIN DATA, XML, nonce XML,
the lookalike-bracket fence from inspect_evals#2181, JSON), each with and
without a warning, plus two instructions-first variants. Each wrapping carries
the close, reopen and fake-reference text a template-aware attacker would use.
W0 with the instructions last renders phase one's prompt byte for byte.

git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): add template-aware attacks and benign controls

Six attacks (fake verdict, forged close, fake reference, authority claim,
format hijack, role spoof), each pushing towards a target verdict with the
wrapping's own markers, and three harmless controls that resemble attacks.
Tests pin every attack string per wrapping and check that W4 neutralises a
forged close and W5 escapes one.

## Prompt variants

`reason_then_verdict`, `verdict_only`, `verdict_then_reason` and `tool_call` take a `prompt` argument, one of the 14 labels in `prompts.VARIANTS` (default `w0-bare`, phase one's prompt). A case with `attack` and `attack_target` has its answer attacked when the prompt is rendered, using the variant's own markers (`attacks.py`). Both are used by the prompt-structure experiment.

Run: uv run pytest tests/grader_comparison -q --no-cov Expected: all pass, phase-one tests included. If test_phase_one_g3_prompt_is_unchanged_by_default fails, the helper is appending text: print repr(seen["prompt"]) and compare with TEMPLATE.format(...).

git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): render G1-G5 and G3 prompts through a chosen variant

Cases gain optional attack and attack_target fields, passed to the scorer in
sample metadata. The free-text graders and the tool-call grader take a prompt
variant (default w0-bare, phase one's prompt byte for byte), apply the case's
attack before wrapping, and record the variant, attack, target and a hash of
the rendered prompt. The tool-call grader still uses schema_tool_graded_scorer
as shipped, through its prompt_vars hook.

git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): build the prompt-structure dataset

Bases are SimpleQA cases that every 2025 and 2026 judge graded in line with
the label in grader-parsing, so a flip can be put down to the attack. Each
wrong base gets six attacks pushing towards yes, each right base five pushing
towards no, and separate right bases carry the benign controls. Clean cases
and controls are the simpleqa slice and attacks the adversarial slice, so one
config runs each. Also writes the smoke run's case ids.

git commit -m "feat(grader_comparison): extract prompt and attack columns; add paired and echo helpers

Rows and replies carry the prompt variant, attack, target, base id and
mutation. anchored_count finds replies that quote a verdict line besides their
own, and paired_difference compares two variants over the same bases with a
bootstrap interval.

Task 7: The prompt-structure analysis

Files:

  • Create: src/eval_experiments/grader_comparison/prompt_structure_analyse.py
  • Modify: tests/grader_comparison/helpers.py (add ps_reply)
  • Test: tests/grader_comparison/test_prompt_structure_analyse.py

Interfaces:

  • Consumes:

    • extract.load_run, prompts.VARIANTS, parsers.anchored_count.
    • stats.case_rate, stats.paired_difference, stats.fmt_rate.
    • The columns from Task 6.
  • Produces:

    • FORMATS = ("reason_then_verdict", "tool_call").
    • prepare(replies: pd.DataFrame) -> pd.DataFrame. It adds headline, wrapping, warning, order, kind (clean, attack or control), control and echo.
    • clean_majority(prepared) -> pd.DataFrame, with columns judge, grader, prompt, base_id, majority, label.
    • attack_outcomes(prepared) -> pd.DataFrame: the attacked rows plus majority, eligible, success and broken.
    • noise_floor(prepared) -> pd.DataFrame: the clean rows plus differs.
    • per_base_success(outcomes) -> pd.DataFrame, with columns judge, grader, prompt, base_id, success, averaged over attacks.
    • summary_markdown(prepared, info) -> str.
    • write_outputs(main_dir: Path, clean_dir: Path, out: Path) -> None, which writes results.csv, replies.csv, summary.md and run.json.
    • CLI python -m eval_experiments.grader_comparison.prompt_structure_analyse MAIN CLEAN --out DIR.

Add to tests/grader_comparison/helpers.py:

Pairs each attacked reply with its base's clean majority under the same judge,
grader and prompt, and reports attack success, breakage, the clean noise floor,
paired differences against w0-bare and w2-xml, warning and order effects, parser
against judge with an echo rate, over-defence and cost. Bases without a clean
majority, or whose majority is wrong, do not count.

replies.csv is written after prepare, so attack_outcomes can read it straight back. Missing values come back as NaN, and _none in the analysis module treats them as None.

Task 9 (controller): Build and freeze the dataset; write the configs

No subagent. The controller runs this with Matt’s environment.

A=~/Developer/inspect_ai/audit-artefacts/grader_comparison
uv run python -m eval_experiments.grader_comparison.make_dataset prompt-structure \
  --labelled $A/datasets/3bf668d3411e/dataset.jsonl \
  --results $A/runs/first_cut_labelled/results.csv \
  --out $A/prompt_structure/datasets/tmp/dataset.jsonl --seed 0

Expected: 430 cases, a SHA-256, and smoke ids -> .../smoke_ids.json with 14 ids. Rename tmp/ to the first 12 hex digits of the hash.

Write $A/prompt_structure/datasets/<hash>/PROVENANCE.md covering:

  • the source dataset 3bf668d3411e, the results file and the unanimous judge list;
  • the sizes (40 wrong, 20 right, 10 per control), the seed and the commit of make_dataset.py;
  • counts by kind, attack and label;
  • a final line: “SimpleQA content: the dataset is not to be committed or published.”

Copy the provenance (not the dataset) to experiments/grader-prompt-structure/results/datasets/<hash>.md.

Write the three configs with this script. It keeps the 28 grader entries identical across them. Adjust HASH and DATASET first.

Expected: 6 judges × 28 graders (Opus 14) = 154 steps, 14 cases each.

  • Every step succeeded, or the failures are understood (provider rejections are recorded as sample errors).

  • One rendered prompt per variant, taken from a ModelEvent request body. Write all 14 rendered prompts for one attacked case (forged_close on the wrong base) to $A/prompt_structure/runs/smoke/rendered_prompts.md for Matt to skim. Check:

    • the W4 glyphs arrive unchanged in the request body (not normalised);
    • the W5 block is valid JSON;
    • the G3 prompt holds the instructions once.
  • Cost per judge from load_run (cost_usd sum by judge), scaled to the full run: × (340 + 90 × 3) / 14 calls per case set. Write $A/prompt_structure/runs/smoke/estimate.md.

Task 11 (controller): Clean and main runs

uv run python -m eval_experiments.grader_comparison.run --config experiments/grader-prompt-structure/configs/clean.yaml
uv run python -m eval_experiments.grader_comparison.run --config experiments/grader-prompt-structure/configs/main.yaml

Re-run either command to resume after an interruption; finished steps are skipped by eval_set. Throttled hosts (CoreWeave for llama) may need --judges <model> re-runs.
